Overactive Sweat Glands

Overactive sweat glands in our body will lead to excessive sweat in your head, face, palms, underarms, at times even your feet. Normally the heat or a case of nerves causes too much sweating, but if you have to always encounter this problem of excessive sweating, it probably means that you have overactive sweat glands and are suffering from a condition known in medical terms as hyperhidrosis.

There is no cause for concern though, since there are a number of treatment options for those who have to endure this condition. Though this condition does not cause any physical pain, the level or discomfort and the embarrassment faced while in social situations become quite unbearable for those suffering from overactive sweat glands. Their activity level or the temperature plays no role in the amount they sweat, which is always more than normal. When your hands and palms are excessively sweaty, you would dread having to go through even simple everyday activities like shaking hands with another person.

Being seen in public places with huge sweat stains all over his shirt or back is also something a person with overactive sweat glands will always try to avoid. Most of the time it may not be possible to change shirts, which leads to things worsening even more.  If all these were not embarrassing enough, there is the added nuisance of body odor!

Overactive sweat glands can truly make a person’s life miserable, till he or she spends time to look into the reasons behind their condition and work on preventing the same. Hyperhidrosis may sometimes be a genetic condition, it could be a side effect of certain drugs, or at times it could be an indicator or some kind of serious illness that has not been diagnosed yet in the person’s body.

The first step towards controlling hyperhidrosis is consulting your doctor, who will be able to determine whether your condition is just a mild one, or a more severe one that needs to be cured through surgery. Sometimes the condition can be treated with the application of prescription medication that needs to be applied topically, or through oral medication like Pro-banthine, Ditropan and Robinul.

Other options are botox injections, which are both expensive and temporary, or Iontophoresis, a weekly treatment offered by some hospitals. You must keep in mind that surgery should be your last options, given others have not yielded the desired results and your condition of overactive sweat glands has been determined by your doctor as  severe.
